Which Four Numbers Actually Matter?

Whichever two models you're comparing, the decision comes down to four things — in this order:

  1. Price gap, controlled for year. Comparing "Toyota Aqua" to "Honda Fit" in the abstract is meaningless — compare a 2018 Aqua to a 2018 Fit. Our live comparison tool lets you filter both vehicles to the same year of manufacture, which is the only fair basis for a price comparison.
  2. Fuel-cost gap over your actual mileage. A hybrid or diesel premium only makes sense if you drive enough to earn it back. Multiply the fuel-economy difference by your real monthly kilometres and Sri Lanka's current fuel price, not a hypothetical "average driver."
  3. Running-cost gap over your ownership horizon. Parts availability, service intervals, and known failure points (hybrid batteries, CVTs, turbo diesels) compound over the years you actually plan to keep the car — not just the first year.
  4. Resale strength. Listing volume is a decent proxy for how liquid a model is when you eventually sell — more active listings generally means faster resale, all else equal.

Why Does Year-of-Manufacture Change Everything?

The single biggest mistake in car-comparison shopping is comparing "the model" instead of "the model in the year you can actually afford." A 2013 Aqua and a 2019 Aqua can differ by Rs. 3M+ — more than the gap between the Aqua and a competing model in the same year.
