The Toyota Corolla Axio is a JDM compact sedan produced 2006–2019 and one of Sri Lanka's most popular family sedans with 2,767 listings, average Rs. 9.42M, median Rs. 9.20M. Two chassis dominate the market: the NRE160 (Gen 2 petrol, 2012–2019) and the NKE165 (Gen 2 Hybrid, 2012–2019). The defining feature of the Sri Lanka Axio market is that the hybrid trades at nearly the same price as the petrol at equivalent model years — an anomaly that makes the NKE165 one of the best-value hybrid purchases in the market.
Model confusion note: The Corolla Fielder is a wagon variant on the same platform — it is a different model. If a listing says "Fielder", it is not an Axio. This guide covers the Axio sedan only.
Chassis Overview
| Chassis | Generation | Years | Engine | Output | Fuel Economy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NZE141 | Gen 1 1.5L | 2006–2012 | 1NZ-FE 1,496cc inline-4 | 109 PS / 138 Nm | ~16 km/L |
| ZRE142 | Gen 1 1.8L | 2006–2012 | 2ZR-FE 1,797cc inline-4 | 136 PS / 173 Nm | ~14 km/L |
| NRE160 | Gen 2 1.5L | 2012–2019 | 1NR-FE 1,496cc inline-4 | 109 PS / 138 Nm | ~17 km/L |
| NKE165 | Gen 2 Hybrid | 2012–2019 | 1NZ-FXE 1,496cc + motor | 74 PS + 61 PS = 100 PS | 23.4 km/L JC08 |
In Sri Lanka, NRE160 is the dominant chassis — approximately 1,609 listings across 2012–2019. The NKE165 Hybrid has significantly less supply (approximately 148 listings in key years). The early Gen 1 chassis (NZE141 and ZRE142) appear in very small numbers in the API data — most early Axios in Sri Lanka are listed by local naming conventions without chassis tags and are not captured in chassis-filtered queries.
Grades available: Axio X (base), Axio G, Axio G Aerotour, Axio G WxB; Hybrid: Axio Hybrid, Axio Hybrid G, Axio Hybrid G WxB.
NRE160 (Gen 2 Petrol) — Price by Year of Manufacture
The NRE160 uses the 1NR-FE 1,496cc DOHC inline-4 producing 109 PS at 6,000 rpm. This engine replaced the 1NZ-FE of the Gen 1 with improved fuel efficiency through variable valve timing on both camshafts (Dual VVT-i). CVT transmission on most units. The Gen 2 body (2012+) brought a more modern exterior over the boxy Gen 1 shape.
| YOM | Listings | Avg Price | Min | Max |

| 2013 | 146 | Rs. 8.68M | Rs. 7.85M | Rs. 10.00M |
| 2014 | 297 | Rs. 9.02M | Rs. 7.70M | Rs. 11.00M |
| 2015 | 422 | Rs. 9.87M | Rs. 7.85M | Rs. 13.00M |
| 2016 | 305 | Rs. 10.68M | Rs. 8.90M | Rs. 12.55M |
| 2017 | 241 | Rs. 11.76M | Rs. 8.60M | Rs. 13.50M |
| 2018 | 137 | Rs. 12.66M | Rs. 10.85M | Rs. 14.50M |
| 2019 | 40 | Rs. 13.22M | Rs. 11.80M | Rs. 15.00M |
The 2015 NRE160 has the deepest pool at 422 listings, average Rs. 9.87M. This is the Axio market's reference price. The progression from 2013 to 2019 is consistent — roughly Rs. 760K–1.1M per additional model year. The Rs. 6.00M minimum in 2012 and Rs. 7.85M floors elsewhere reflect outlier units; the realistic entry price for a roadworthy NRE160 is Rs. 8.00M+ (2013) or Rs. 9.00M+ (2015).

NKE165 (Gen 2 Hybrid) — Price by Year of Manufacture
The NKE165 pairs the 1NZ-FXE 1,496cc Atkinson-cycle engine (the same engine family as the Toyota Aqua NHP10) with Toyota's hybrid system, producing a combined 100 PS. JC08 fuel economy is rated at 23.4 km/L — Sri Lanka owners report 18–22 km/L in mixed driving, notably better than the NRE160's 14–17 km/L real-world economy in Colombo conditions. The NKE165 uses a nickel-metal hydride battery — same proven technology as the Aqua NHP10 and Prius ZVW30.
| YOM | Listings | Avg Price | NRE160 Same Year | Hybrid Premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | 12 | Rs. 8.90M | Rs. 8.68M | +Rs. 220K |
| 2014 | 37 | Rs. 9.14M | Rs. 9.02M | +Rs. 120K |
| 2015 | 36 | Rs. 10.30M | Rs. 9.87M | +Rs. 430K |
| 2016 | 22 | Rs. 10.73M | Rs. 10.68M | +Rs. 50K |
| 2017 | 16 | Rs. 11.52M | Rs. 11.76M | -Rs. 240K (Hybrid cheaper!) |
| 2018 | 9 | Rs. 11.62M | Rs. 12.66M | -Rs. 1.04M (Hybrid much cheaper!) |
The hybrid-to-petrol premium essentially disappears — and in 2017 and 2018, the NKE165 Hybrid is actually cheaper than the NRE160 petrol at the same year. This is a market anomaly driven by supply: there are far fewer NKE165 listings (thin market), so they don't establish the same price premium as a large-volume hybrid like the Toyota Aqua. A 2017 NKE165 at Rs. 11.52M vs a 2017 NRE160 at Rs. 11.76M gives you hybrid fuel economy for Rs. 240K less than the petrol equivalent.
The NKE165 supply is thin across all years (9–37 listings per year), which means you have limited choice and less negotiating room than the NRE160.
The Value Case for the NKE165
At equivalent model years, the NKE165 offers:
- Fuel savings: ~5–7 km/L real-world advantage over NRE160 in Colombo. At 1,500 km/month and Rs. 340/L petrol, this saves approximately Rs. 5,000–7,000/month — Rs. 60K–84K/year.
- Identical platform: Same body, same interior, same boot space. The hybrid system adds no cargo penalty.
- Proven battery: Same NiMH chemistry as the Toyota Aqua NHP10 — known long-term reliability in tropical climates.
- Near-parity pricing: The 2014 NKE165 at Rs. 9.14M vs NRE160 at Rs. 9.02M costs only Rs. 120K more for the hybrid system.
Which Chassis Should You Buy?
- Budget Rs. 8.5M–9.5M: 2013–2014 NRE160 (146–297 listings). Proven petrol drivetrain, wide service network, good supply for negotiating.
- Budget Rs. 9M–10M and want hybrid: 2014 NKE165 (37 listings, Rs. 9.14M). Only Rs. 120K more than the petrol equivalent. Thin supply — inspect carefully before committing.
- Budget Rs. 9.5M–10.5M: 2015 NRE160 (422 listings, Rs. 9.87M). Deepest market year. Or consider the 2015 NKE165 (36 listings, Rs. 10.30M) for Rs. 430K more with hybrid economy.
- Budget Rs. 11.5M+ with hybrid preference: 2017 NKE165 (Rs. 11.52M) vs 2017 NRE160 (Rs. 11.76M) — the hybrid is Rs. 240K cheaper. This is a clear hybrid win.
