The Nissan March (Micra in UK and Europe) is Sri Lanka's most affordable reliable hatchback — 1,261 listings, average Rs. 3.34M, median Rs. 3.36M. This price point puts it alongside the Suzuki Alto HA25S and below the Toyota Vitz SCP10, making it one of the few entry-level modern imports with a genuine track record.

One fact defines the March market in Sri Lanka: the K12 (Gen 3, 2002–2010) accounts for virtually all listings — the K13 (Gen 4, 2010–2019) has only 9 recorded listings. This is one of the most extreme chassis imbalances in Sri Lanka's used car market, and it has a specific explanation.

Chassis Overview

K13Gen 42010–2019HR12DE DOHC inline-31,198cc79 PS

The K11 (Gen 2) is rare in Sri Lanka — a few listings exist but supply is extremely thin. The K12 is the definitive March for the Sri Lanka market. The K14 (Gen 5, Europe Micra from 2017) was never sold as "March" in Japan and does not appear as JDM "March" in Sri Lanka.

Grades for K12: 12S (base), 12G (mid), 12SR (sport), 12X (premium), 12i (economy), 12G Four / 12X Four (4WD). The nismo S limited edition (K13 only) is extremely rare. "March Autech" refers to special edition units by Nissan's Autech division.

Why the K13 Barely Exists in Sri Lanka

The Gen 4 K13 was sold in Japan from 2010 to 2019 and is readily available in JDM markets. However, Sri Lanka's import duty structure and buyer preferences heavily favoured the K12 over the K13 during the key import windows. Most Nissan March imports to Sri Lanka occurred between 2002–2014, exactly when the K12 was the current or recent generation. By the time the K13 had meaningful used market depth in Japan, Sri Lankan import patterns had shifted toward other models (Toyota Aqua, Honda Vezel, etc.).

As a result: the K13 has only 9 listings in Sri Lanka, averaging Rs. 5.20M–5.38M — nearly Rs. 1.6M above the K12 for a newer chassis with near-identical engine output. At that price, Sri Lankan buyers can access GD1 Honda Fit or KSP90 Toyota Vitz alternatives with larger markets. The K13's thin supply creates a lack of market data and negligible negotiating room.

K12 (Gen 3) — Price by Year of Manufacture

The K12 uses the CR12DE 1,240cc DOHC inline-3 producing 79 PS at 5,900 rpm — a significant step up from the K11's 1.0L. The K12 introduced a more modern exterior and improved interior quality over the K11. CVT or 4-speed automatic on most Sri Lanka units.

The CR12DE engine has a solid reliability reputation when maintained with regular oil changes. Timing chain (not belt) eliminates belt replacement costs. Known maintenance items: throttle body cleaning at 60,000–80,000 km, CVT fluid change every 40,000 km.

The 2002 K12 has 107 listings — the largest single March year in Sri Lanka — at an average of Rs. 3.61M. These are 23-year-old cars; the Rs. 2.80M minimum reflects high-mileage or non-running units. The realistic floor for a roadworthy 2002 K12 in daily-driver condition is Rs. 3.25M+.

The 2007 K12 (56 listings, Rs. 4.31M) is the best balance of age and condition within the generation — 18 years old rather than 23, with similar supply depth and reasonable pricing. Inspect the CVT carefully on all K12 units: Nissan's CVT from this era requires proper fluid maintenance intervals.

The March vs the Competition at Rs. 3.5M–4.5M

The March K12's unique position: it is the cheapest modern 3-cylinder hatchback with meaningfully large listing supply (107+ listings) at its price point. The 2011 Suzuki Alto HA25S (381 listings, Rs. 3.09M) is cheaper but smaller at 660cc vs the K12's 1,240cc. The March offers near-car-class engine size and driving dynamics at kei-adjacient prices.

Grades: 12S, 12G, 12SR, 12X — What to Choose

  • 12S: Base grade. No air conditioning on some units — verify before purchase.
  • 12G: Mid grade. Air conditioning standard, standard audio. Most common in Sri Lanka.
  • 12SR: Sport look — body kit, different bumpers, no performance difference over 12G. Lower suspension may be harder on rough roads.
  • 12X: Premium grade. Alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering, better audio. Worth seeking at the same price as a 12G.
  • 12G/12X Four: 4WD variant. Rare. Commands Rs. 200K–400K premium.

All K12 grades share the same CR12DE engine — grade selection is comfort and cosmetic, not reliability.

Which Chassis to Buy?

  • Budget Rs. 3.2M–3.8M: 2002–2004 K12 (107–35 listings). Most affordable entry, but these are 20+ year old cars. Commission a mechanical inspection and focus on CVT condition and underbody rust.
  • Budget Rs. 4.0M–4.5M: 2007 K12 (56 listings, Rs. 4.31M). The best March value — 7 years newer than 2002, similar listing depth, significantly better expected condition.
  • K13 consideration: Only buy a K13 if you can verify full service history and accept thin supply (no market reference pricing, no negotiating room). At K13 prices (Rs. 5.20M+), a Toyota Vitz KSP90 offers far more market liquidity.
