Ask any tuk-tuk driver, any car sales broker, any uncle at a wedding with an opinion about vehicles, and you'll get a confident answer to "what holds its value best in Sri Lanka?" Usually it's a kei car — an Alto, a Wagon R — on the theory that cheap, simple, and universally serviceable equals durable value. The live pricing data tells a more interesting story, and it isn't the one the wedding uncle expects.
Using by-year average asking prices pulled directly from the PriceMart.lk API, we compared seven models spanning Sri Lanka's used car market — from a Rs. 3.78M Suzuki Alto to a Rs. 17.39M Honda Vezel — and measured how steeply each one's price falls as the car ages. The budget kei car that's supposed to be the "safe" value play turned out to depreciate the fastest, in percentage terms, of anything in the study. The Toyota Aqua, a car nobody describes as a value-retention icon, came out on top.
Methodology Note — Read This First
PriceMart.lk does not hold original MSRP or import-price data, so this is not a "percent retained from purchase price" study. Instead, for each model we compared average asking prices across two year-of-manufacture (YOM) cohorts — a newer one and an older one, both from before Sri Lanka's 2022–2025 import freeze — and expressed the gap as a percentage decline per year of age. This is an asking-price-based proxy for depreciation, built entirely from live listings currently on the market, not a study of any individual car's value from the day it was purchased. Post-freeze (2023–2026) YOM cohorts were deliberately excluded from the rate calculation because they represent freshly imported stock at new, duty-inflated price levels — comparing them to older organically-aged stock would conflate "new car, new tax regime" with "same car, more years on the clock." The Ranking: Gentlest Decline to Steepest
For each model, we picked two pre-freeze YOM cohorts with genuine sample depth, measured the price gap between them, and annualized it. The result is a single number — percent price decline per year of age — that lets a kei car, a hybrid, an EV, two sedans, and a crossover all be compared on the same axis.

Why the Aqua Holds Value Best
The Toyota Aqua's 3.85% annual decline is not an accident of small sample noise — both its anchor cohorts (2012 and 2017) sit inside the NHP10 generation's deepest, most liquid trading years, before the model transitioned to the newer MXPK11 platform. Two structural factors explain the gentle curve. First, the Aqua's full hybrid powertrain remains meaningfully cheaper to run than any petrol competitor at current fuel prices, which keeps demand — and therefore resale price — supported even as the car ages. Second, the NHP10 Aqua occupies a specific price lane (roughly Rs. 7M–9M) with limited direct competition; the Honda Fit is a mild hybrid, not a full one, and the Prius sits meaningfully higher. That lack of a close substitute lets aging Aquas hold their price more stubbornly than a commodity car would. Why the Alto Depreciates Fastest — Despite Being the Cheapest Car Here
This is the finding that upends the "kei cars hold value" assumption. The Suzuki Alto's 6.58% annual decline is the steepest of any model in the study, and the mechanism is really about supply, not quality. The Alto has the deepest, broadest, most continuously replenished used-car pool of any nameplate covered here — new-condition examples arrive constantly, from multiple generations (HA25S, HA36S, HA97S) spanning two decades. That abundance is exactly what keeps entry prices so attractive for buyers, but it also means an aging Alto is competing against a much larger pool of similarly cheap, similarly serviceable alternatives than an aging Aqua or Vezel ever has to. Reliability and mechanic familiarity keep the Alto's price floor from collapsing outright, but they don't stop it sliding faster, in percentage terms, than the rest of the market. The Middle of the Pack: EV, Sedans, and the Vezel
The Nissan Leaf's 4.90% annual decline sits comfortably in second place among the non-Aqua models, but this number needs a caveat the others don't: it was measured entirely within the ZE0 generation (2012–2015), before the AZE0 generation's 30 kWh and 40 kWh packs entered the market and reset the price curve upward for genuinely different reasons — more range, not less age. Within a single battery generation, the Leaf holds up reasonably well. Across generations, the story is dominated by battery chemistry, not aging in the conventional sense — more on that below.
The two sedans in the study, Toyota Premio (5.56%/yr) and Toyota Axio (6.25%/yr), tell a segment-level story: both are conventional, non-hybrid-dominant sedans with a wide range of competing nameplates (Allion, Corolla, Honda Grace), and both decline faster than the Aqua or Wagon R but slower than the Alto. The Premio's slightly gentler curve likely reflects its position as the more spacious, more premium-feeling of the two — a meaningfully different ownership experience from the Axio that keeps some price separation intact even as both age.
The Honda Vezel, at 5.69%/yr, sits almost exactly at the market median despite being by far the most expensive model in this study. That a Rs. 17M+ crossover depreciates at close to the same percentage rate as a Rs. 12M sedan is itself notable — it suggests Sri Lanka's compact-SUV demand has remained structurally strong enough to resist the kind of premium-segment price collapse seen in some other markets.
Raw Price Curves: Aqua, Alto, and Vezel Side by Side
Annualized rates compress a lot of information into one number. Looking at the underlying pre-freeze year-by-year curves for three standout models — the gentlest decliner (Aqua), the steepest decliner (Alto), and the most expensive model in the study (Vezel) — shows how differently those curves actually behave in absolute rupee terms.
AVERAGE PRICE BY YEAR OF MANUFACTURE — PRE-FREEZE YEARS (RS.)
Note the Vezel line only starts at 2013 — the model's local market presence before that year is too thin to trust. What the shape shows is instructive: the Vezel's curve rises more steeply in absolute rupee terms than either the Alto's or Aqua's, but because it's rising from a much higher base, the percentage rate stays moderate. The Alto and Aqua curves look deceptively similar in shape here — the real separation between them only shows up when you divide by their very different price bases, which is exactly what the annualized percentage figures above are designed to reveal.
Battery Health: The Caveat No YOM Number Captures
For the two electrified models in this study — the Nissan Leaf and the Toyota Aqua — the YOM-based decline rate is a population-level average. At the individual-car level, actual value retention is dominated by battery condition far more than by calendar age, and Sri Lanka's tropical climate accelerates degradation in both hybrid and full-EV packs. Before buying either model, verify battery health directly rather than trusting the model year alone:
- Nissan Leaf (ZE0 / AZE0 / ZE1): Check the dashboard capacity gauge bars before anything else — a healthy ZE0 should show 10+ of 12 bars; below 8 bars means significantly reduced real-world range regardless of what the YOM suggests. AZE0 and ZE1 packs (30 kWh and 40 kWh) degrade more slowly but should still be checked with a proper capacity scan, not just the dash gauge.
- Toyota Aqua (NHP10): Request a hybrid system health check from a Toyota-authorised specialist before purchase. A failing NHP10 hybrid battery is a Rs. 150,000–350,000 replacement cost that can silently erase whatever "value retention" advantage the model's price data suggests — the data reflects asking prices for cars in unknown battery condition, not verified-healthy ones.
In practice, this means the Aqua's value-retention advantage is real at the market level but not guaranteed at the individual-car level — a well-maintained example will hold the curve shown above; a neglected one with a failing hybrid battery will not.
Models We Tested and Dropped
Three candidates that fit this study's brief were checked against the live API and excluded because the data couldn't support a defensible decline-rate calculation:
- Toyota Raize: The nameplate's local sales history barely predates the import freeze itself — its earliest cohorts are already recent enough that there's no genuinely "old, organically aged" stock to compare against. Every available YOM here is close enough to the freeze period that the curve mostly reflects new-import pricing dynamics, not aging.
- Toyota Corolla: Deep, reliable supply exists for pre-2010 model years, but the 2013–2022 cohorts thin out to single-digit and even single-unit sample sizes — too noisy for a trustworthy pre-freeze comparison band. The nameplate has effectively been succeeded in current listings by the Axio, Premio, and Allion, which is why those newer siblings appear in this study instead.
- Daihatsu Mira: Data quality here is genuinely fine, and its curve shape closely tracks the Alto's. It was left out simply to avoid two near-identical kei cars crowding the same segment slot — the Alto and Wagon R already cover that ground with more supply depth.

What This Means If You're Buying
1. Cheap and simple isn't the same as "holds value." The Alto's low price floor is a real advantage for entry-level buyers, but the data shows it depreciates faster, percentage-wise, than every other model tested — a direct result of just how much competing supply exists at every age band.
2. A scarce, hard-to-substitute drivetrain is the strongest value-retention signal in this dataset. The Aqua's full hybrid system, in a price band with no close full-hybrid competitor, produced the gentlest curve of any model here. If value retention matters to your decision, look for cars that occupy a similar "few close substitutes" position rather than the most crowded segment.
3. For EVs and hybrids specifically, get the battery checked before you trust any price curve. Population-level decline rates say nothing about the one car in front of you. A verified-healthy battery is worth more than the YOM on the registration book.
